Counseling vs Coaching

Updated: Dec 31, 2022

What’s the difference between counseling and coaching?

Counseling and coaching are often confused and for good reason. They can seem similar and are often grouped together in terms of mental health benefits and resources. But I’d love to share with you some key differences between coaching and counseling so you can understand the difference.

Counseling is meant to help a patient or client process events and experience that have happened in their life. This can include focusing on their past, trauma, coping mechanisms and relationships that have shaped who the client or individual is. Counselors use their training in human psyche to help a patient unlock the “how’s and whys” of who they are today. This can be incredibly insightful and healing for the client as they navigate their past or current circumstances.

For those of you who have been involved in athletics, coaching is not an unfamiliar concept to you. A coach is a leader who helps you develop your skills and talents into the best athlete you can be. They push you and challenge you. A good coach will even piss you off and make you question why you chose the sport or arena of expertise you are in. A coach develops the player and helps them shine in their zone of expertise. A good coach helps a client identify roadblocks and helps them formulate a plan to push through those roadblocks. When the athlete succeeds, so does their coach.

And that’s what I do as a health and wellness nurse coach. I help my clients find tools and techniques to help them succeed in their zones of genius. I believe in empowering my clients and helping them push through health and wellness limitations, trauma responses and formulating strategies so they can live their fullest and happiest lives! I’d love to connect with you for a free consultation and see if I’d be a good fit for your health and wellness goals.  Please reach out at
